Overview

On Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, The International SeaKeepers Society hosted a Classroom on the Sand with 21 elementary students and 3 educators from Little Flower Catholic School at Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park in Dania Beach, Florida. To begin our day, students and chaperones made their way down to the beach and throughout the park and began removing debris from the coastline and rest areas. The area around the park routinely hosts gatherings such as large parties, picnics, and even community events, leading to the shores and park itself being constantly inundated with high amounts of debris. In just one hour, our team of students and chaperones managed to collect over 15 pounds of trash from all over the coastline, leaving behind healthier and happier ecosystems for local animals as well as us to enjoy. We even saw several Horse Conch egg casings that reminded us how valuable the shoreline is for the health of local animal populations, even mollusks! Following our cleanup, students had the chance to model and observe pollution dynamics in practice through the use of our Enviroscapes Dynamic Watershed Table. Our students were experts on the types of pollution, easily knowing all of the major types and even a few of the much less commonly known aspects of pollution in South Florida. We give a huge thanks to the students and chaperones of Little Flower Catholic School for their hard work and active participation in our day's activities. We hope to see some of these students and educators again soon at future SeaKeepers events!
