Overview

On Monday, February 10th, 2025, The International SeaKeepers Society hosted the sixth Junior SeaKeepers Program workshop for 24-25 cohort students. This JSK workshop was a crash course in creating successful resumés and CVs, as well as tips for finding future opportunities similar to the Junior SeaKeepers Program, volunteer positions, or internships. This week's workshop was led by our Director of Education & Outreach, Toni Lohroff.

The workshop began with a discussion of the general differences between resumés and curriculum vitaes (CVs) including when one may be favored over the other and why. Students identified specific elements of these documents that make translating personal and professional experiences, certifications, etc. into marketable skills to be advertised to potential academic programs, employers, internships, and more. We outlined important skills and experiences that should always or never be included in these documents, and even dove a bit into the complicated rules that can sometimes accompany the call for resumés and CVs. Students were then introduced to local and global opportunities that they might be interested in following their graduation from the JSK program in June 2025, after completing their high school education, or at any point in their academic or professional careers. In particular, local programs with SeaKeepers collaborators like Miami Waterkeeper, BLUE Missions, and many others were marketed to students as a way to continue their growth in local community engagement and marine conservation education after this program. The information JSKs received as a part of the February Workshop may be largely applicable to our current upperclassmen students, but will be invaluable for the futures of all students in progressing in future careers, from service to STEM and beyond!

By attending workshops with the SeaKeepers team and our collaborators, Junior SeaKeepers have the opportunity to develop personal and professional skills that will aid them in their advancement in STEM studies and careers. We hope that workshops give students a glimpse into how much they have to gain out of this unique extracurricular program!
